UFC San Antonio saw one of the most controversial judgings in the organization’s history. Cory Sandhagen displayed one of the most dominant performances in his bout against Marlon Vera. However, instead of getting a unanimous decision, Sandhagen won a split decision owing to controversial judging. While many were confused with the scorecard, Cory might know why he was the victim of bad judging. During his appearance on “The Joe Rogan Experience, ” the bantamweight fighter gave his speculation.

The main event at UFC San Antonio was a bantamweight bout between two high-level athletes. Cory Sandhagen, who was coming off a win against Song Yadong, faced Marlon Vera, who defeated Dominick Cruz in his last fight. Cory Sandhagen displayed possibly his greatest performance inside the octagon and dominated Vera for 3 rounds. While Cory Sandhagen won the fight, one of the three judges scored the contest in favor of Vera. This absurd judging left many puzzled and enraged. Cory Sandhagen revealed that the biased judging might have something to do with his past.

On the podcast with Joe Rogan, Sandhagen revealed that Joel Ojeda also refereed a fight of Cory’s teammate 4 years ago. The judge made a controversial stoppage and Sandhagen’s teammate lost the fight. Cory later argued with the judge and might have said some mean things. “That guy was refereeing a fight of my guy, like four years ago. My guy was in a rear-naked choke, but it wasn’t sunken in… We were yelling like, ‘Don’t stop it, don’t stop it.’ The guy stops it, and then I’m like, ‘Hey man, you really screwed that up.’ And maybe I didn’t say it that nicely, but that same ref was the judge that scored it for Chito,” said Cory.

Many fighters since the event have called out the judge and his bad judgment. While the Nevada State Athletic Commission appoints the judges, fans have asked UFC and Dana White to look into the matter as well.

Joe Rogan had some strong opinions on MMA judges while talking with guest Cory Sandhagen on his podcast. Cory Sandhagen himself was a victim of controversial judging in his fight against Marlon Vera. While controversial judging has been rampant in UFC, it is not taken care of. Joe Rogan on his podcast talked about the UFC needing better judges and a point system.

I think it should be a very comprehensive system and I think there should be way more than 3 judges. There’s a really good argument to have 10 judges who are experts,” said Rogan. Joe Rogan believes that world-class coaches and trainers should be hired as judges. With 10 of these judges, there is a 99.9% chance of getting the correct decisions. Rogan further complained about the 10-point system and revealed that it is useful in boxing, but a sport like MMA has many more elements to the game.

Cory Sandhagen also added that takedowns should be scored like collegiate wrestling, which solves a lot of problems. The UFC does not appoint judges for the fight instead, they are appointed by the athletic commission. While bad judging has been a rampant issue in UFC, not a lot has been done regarding this issue.
