Cris Cyborg took to Twitter to blast Amanda Nunes. She wrote, “Because you waited to (two) years to fight at 145 instead of giving me the rematch.” Nunes and Cyborg headlined the co-main event of UFC 232 in the women’s featherweight division. Cyborg claimed that a rematch did not happen because Nunes waited a long time to accept the rematch. However, no one really knows why the rematch did not happen.

Cris Cyborg fought one more time in the UFC after losing to Nunes. She fought Felicia Spencer in 2019 before joining the Bellator MMA promotion. She is the current Bellator women’s featherweight champion. She defeated Julia Budd in January 2020 to become the champion. Since then, she has showcased dominant performances to retain her title.

Meanwhile, Amanda Nunes dominated the UFC featherweight division with title defenses over Felicia Spencer and Megan Anderson. However, she lost her bantamweight title to Julianna Pena at UFC 269. Nunes reclaimed the title at UFC 277 after she dominated Julianna Pena from start to finish. Currently, she remains the only fighter to hold the double champion status in the UFC.

Bantamweight fighters Amanda Nunes and Juliana Pena were scheduled to compete in a trilogy bout at UFC 289. Both have a victory over each other, and the trilogy would determine the better fighter among them. Fight fans were not interested to see them both fight again.

In a strange turn of events, UFC President Dana White informed that Pena had injured her ribs and would not compete at UFC 289. Irene Aldana will replace Pena in the title fight. Aldana will be a fresh matchup for Nunes. Aldana is known for her boxing style, and Nunes might need to utilize her wrestling to defeat the Mexican fighter.

Irene Aldana will look to become the second Mexican female fighter to win the UFC gold. Alexa Grasso defeated Valentina Shevchenko to become the new flyweight champion at UFC 285. Grasso was also the first Mexican woman to win a UFC title. Aldana hopes to follow in the footsteps of her compatriot to become the new champion from Mexico.
