“They don’t have the division,” Cris Cyborg dismisses possible return to UFC due to no competition at 145-lbs
Cris Cyborg
Former Invicta FC, UFC and current Bellator MMA featherweight champion Cris Cyborg has done it all as a female mixed martial artist and the benchmark of a women athlete’s legacy has been set very high. In the course of 17 years of her professional MMA career, Cyborg has gone down to become one of the greatest women’s mixed martial artists and the only woman to have the featherweight title in multiple major MMA promotions.
Cyborg is going to face Arlene Blencowe this weekend at Bellator 279 for her featherweight title defence. In course of her career which spans nearly 2 decades, Cyborg has secured wins over the likes of Gina Carano, Leslie Smith, Sinead Kavanaugh, Blencowe, Felicia Spencer, Yana Kunitskaya, Holly Holm, Tonya Evinger, Lina Lansberg and many more.
Cris Cyborg says that girls had to go up to arrange competition for her in the UFC
In an interview with ESPN Correspondent Marc Raimondi, Cyborg talks about her fight this weekend, how has she been doing in Hawaii, any possibilities of her being in the realm of professional wrestling, thoughts on retirement and much more. She also answered about whether a rematch with Amanda Nunes would lure her in getting her back to the UFC.
“The reality is [the UFC] don’t have too many girls for me to fight,” says Cyborg “Girls will just go up a little bit [to 145]. But in reality, the UFC doesn’t have a division at 145 pounds,” she concludes.
Regardless of the above reason, Cyborg and the UFC never had a good relationship on a business and personal level. Cyborg has been one of the most open supporters of Youtuber-cum-boxer Jake Paul’s campaign of exposing UFC for underpaying fighters. Also, on a personal level, a very long time ago UFC President Dana White teased Cyborg in 2014 for looking like “Wanderlei Silva on heels”, now this couldn’t get any worse.
But what do you make of Cyborg’s claim of lack of competition at Bellator? Do you think Cyborg is right? Where do you think Cyborg should step next when her contract with Bellator MMA gets over? Where do you put Cyborg amongst the greats of all time in MMA?
