The former bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling grabbed the spotlight due to his disagreement with UFC president Dana White. In the post-fight press conference of Dana White’s Contender Series, the UFC boss had his say on the situation with Sterling and his thoughts about Sterling as a person.
White said, “So when you sit down with Aljamain one-on-one, he’s a great guy, a great kid. Very likable. The decisions he makes in public and the things that he says in public do not make him the most popular guy on the roster.” Further, White also claimed Sterling could be ‘self-sabotaging’ his career. The UFC boss felt that saying right things in the media could’ve changed the world’s outlook towards Sterling.
Despite his hot take, White praised Sterling for his accomplishments in his career. Even the former bantamweight champion recently spoke about his situation with White. Sterling has criticized Sean O’Malley for being gifted a title shot despite fighting just one ranked opponent. The “Funkmaster” blamed White for the unfair privilege given to O’Malley.
Both individuals have gone back and forth on the recent Merab Dvalishvili situation. After O’Malley’s UFC 292 win, Merab has the best resume for the title fight. But the Georgian national chose to give his opportunity to Sterling. This decision rubbed the UFC president in the wrong way. White expressed his disappointment regarding this friendship and how it affected the division. Later, Sterling confirmed his affirmation regarding Merab receiving a title shot.
Former champion Aljamain Sterling fought against his will at UFC 292

UFC 292 was a dreadful occasion for former bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling. The 2nd round knockout punch from Sean O’Malley removed that shiny belt from the “Funkmaster.” But one of the turning points in that fight could be Sterling taking up the challenge on short notice.
In the buildup to UFC 292, Sterling appeared on many podcasts and interviews. There, Sterling spoke about the problematic situation that he was stuck in. Reportedly, UFC pressured Sterling to take the Sean O’Malley fight. This decision was difficult for Sterling as he had just come off a hard-fought victory against Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo. Further, the UFC had also planned for an interim title fight between O’Malley and Cejudo in case Sterling said no. These factors forced Sterling to take up the fight at short notice.
This two-month break ended up snatching the title away from Sterling. O’Malley became the new superstar at 135 lbs after his knockout win. Nevertheless, Aljamain still remains a heavy favorite in contention for his future rematch with O’Malley.
