“Weight off his shoulders” Dana White discusses Kamaru Usman’s attitude after his HEARTBREAKING loss at UFC 278
Dana White and Kamaru Usman
Kamaru Usman is a hell of a fighter. In an interview with Helen Yee, match referee Herb Dean detailed how Usman was “on another level.” Dana White also talked of how the fight was a “complete, but not fan-friendly performance” from “The Nigerian Nightmare”. But, such is the nature of the brutal sport, that Kamaru Usman’s 15-fight win-streak came to a devastating end in the last minute of the 5th round.
Going into the fight, Kamaru Usman was the solid favorite in all the betmaker’s books, some even calling him a -400 favorite. If not by finish, most fans and experts had pegged him to end the night with a decision victory, and yet another title defense in his pocket.
A win over Leon Edwards would have been his 16th consecutive win in the UFC, bringing him that much closer to the overall GOAT status in the Welterweight division, alongside Canadian Georges St-Pierre. Should he have secured the win, he probably would have set his sights on the 205 lb. throne occupied by Jiri Prochazka at the moment.
Despite the shocking nature of the defeat, Usman has remained generally positive in the limited engagement that he has had with the media, even crediting “Rocky” for the viral finish.

“Tying and breaking Anderson” – Dana White comments on Kamaru Usman’s incredible title run
In the post-fight presser for Dana White’s Contender Series, the UFC CEO had a few updates to provide about Kamaru Usman’s feelings about the devastating KO.
“He’s ready for the rematch…he feels as if the weight’s been lifted off his shoulders…He had been tying and breaking Anderson (Silva’s) records.” The UFC boss said in response to John Morgan asking him if he had had the chance to speak with Usman. Dana White, previously, had had no qualms in saying that Usman gets an immediate rematch with Edwards, stating his utter and sheer dominance.
Additionally, White is also looking to host the event at the massive Wembley, which would mark the 3rd UFC event in London since the pandemic began. The only thing Dana seems to be scared of is the bad weather!
Showering Usman with respect, White also spoke in high regard about Leon Edwards. Dana White noted his notorious bad luck – detailing how Edwards had signed to fight then-unranked Khamzat Chimaev 2-3 times before the bouts got canceled in the end. “He’s down, he’s ready to defend, he’s just great!’’ added Dana White.
