“Still No 7”- Dana White disputes the notion that Tony Ferguson is fighting for his UFC career

Tony Ferguson found unexpected support from Jake Paul after his complaints about Dana White and the UFC

Tony Ferguson was on the verge of reaching his greatest success in the UFC only two years ago. Ferguson had won 25 of his 28 professional fights after destroying 12 opponents in a row. Ferguson’s next opponent at UFC 249 was the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov, and he was ready to reach new heights by earning the undisputed lightweight belt and forever shattering Nurmagomedov’s perfect record.

Ferguson’s legacy would have been eternally altered. However, things changed. There was the question of travel during the epidemic, and then there was the hospitalization of Nurmagomedov’s father after he was diagnosed with COVID-19. The bout was turned into an interim title fight when Justin Gaethje replaced Nurmagomedov, and what appeared to be a legendary moment for Ferguson instead became a breakout fight for his opponent.

Gaethje dominated the fight from start to finish, winning by TKO with just over a minute remaining in the final round, sending Ferguson into a career-ending slump.

In the co-main event of UFC 256, Charles Oliveira defeated Tony. In the co-main event of UFC 262, the former interim lightweight champion was completely crushed by Beneil Dariush over three rounds, resulting in another defeat. Ferguson is now 0-3 in his last three Octagon appearances, having lost to Justin Gaethje and Charles Oliveira in 2020.

Despite losing his last three fights, Tony Ferguson is not fighting for his UFC life this weekend, according to UFC boss Dana White, who told TMZ Sports that Tony is still an elite level fighter in the world’s top MMA company.

In an interview with TMZ, Dana stated, “[Tony’s] still the number 7 ranked guy in the world,” White said. “Still in the top 10. Still in the top 15. Still one of the most elite fighters in the world. If you look at who he’s fought, he’s fought everybody. So, I wouldn’t say he’s fighting for his UFC life.”

There will be continuous talk about Ferguson’s downfall if he loses his fourth straight in 274 as a large underdog. However, he is hoping to take advantage of an opponent who is also on a losing skid. Chandler has lost his last two fights, and Ferguson believes he has lulled the former Bellator star into complacency.
