Brock Lesnar was the spark that lit up in Dana White’s mind when he realized the amount of money a superstar athlete can make for his organization. The spark set up flames that followed like the iconic runs of Ronda Rousey and Conor McGregor. For a man who made his career out of defying the odds and making a dying company one of the most successful sporting brands on the globe, Dana White has the right amount of regrets, very few.
Dana White took over the UFC along with the help of Casino Royalty and childhood friends the Fertitta Brothers. The next few years were an uphill battle for the trio as they struggled to find broadcasters much less tackle the problem of legalizing the sport across the US. As the years passed and phenomenons like the Ultimate Fighter were put to screen, the sport slowly but surely started climbing up the ladder. Then came the superstar era of the early days of the sport with stars like Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture reigning over the sport, ultimately culminating in the rise of Brock Lesnar.
Lesnar was a former WWE superstar, amateur wrestling champion and NFL try out looking to make a mark on another sport, and make one he did. Ramming everyone on his path to the top, winning the heavyweight championship in only his third UFC fight, his fourth fight ever in mixed martial arts, Brock set his name in the rafters of MMA for years to come. Around this time another Superstar who was looking for a new home is consensus heavyweight GOAT Fedor Emelianenko.
Dana White thinks Brock Lesnar vs Fedor Emelianenko was the only fight he failed to make
Emelianenko was still on his epic 27 fight winning streak when he looked to settle into the US MMA scene after the downfall of pride. At a recent Fan Q&A with Laura Sanko, Dana White revealed that the biggest regret he has had as a promoter was not being able to set up the fight between the two.
Fedor and the UFC would have their share of problems when it came to finances and contract durations, ultimately pushing the Russian toward Affliction MMA. Sanko asked Dana a question by a Twitter user that asked what was a dream fight for the boss if age and time of their career weren’t a barrier. “If you think about it, I’ve made every fight we could ever make including Mayweather and McGregor,” said White reiterating how ruthless the UFC has been in creating fights that the fans wish to see.
“The only I’ve ever failed to make is Fedor vs Brock, every other fight if you think about what the fans wanted to see, we’ve made it, ” Said White regretting that he couldn’t pull off the dream fight up. He also states another fight he would make if he were to bend the rules of time to be GSP vs Khabib
