“He commands BIG DOLLARS,” Daniel Cormier explains why Tony Ferguson gets a tough fight in his welterweight debut at UFC 279
Tony Ferguson- Daniel Cormier
For UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier, Tony Ferguson‘s welterweight debut to be against a highly ranked opponent might have tough reasoning behind it. Cormier is the former Olympian and the former simultaneous 2 division UFC champion. He is also the second UFC fighter to have that achievement. Cormier got inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in the class of 2022 alongside the likes of Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was Ferguson’s fiercest rival at one point in time.
Cormier’s list of victories includes the likes of Frank Mir, Roy Nelson, Josh Barnett, Antonio Silva, Alexander Gustafsson, Volkan Oezdemir, Anthony Johnson, Stipe Miocic and many more. Cormier trained throughout his MMA career out of the American Kickboxing Academy in California under the tutelage of head coach Javier Mendez and alongside the likes of Khabib Nurmagomedov, Cain Velasquez, Luke Rockhold, Josh Thomson and many more. Cormier today is a successful Youtuber, an ESPN MMA presenter, a UFC presenter and a UFC sports analyst as well.
Daniel Cormier believes Tony Ferguson is always in to the fight toughest fight anyway
In one of the videos on his Youtube channel, Cormier talked about Stipe Miocic being the only person who deserves the Jon Jones fight because of his legacy, Kamaru Usman talking about him taking a “20-minute nap” from the Leon Edwards fight and much more. In the end, Cormier talks about the legacy of former interim-UFC lightweight champion Tony Ferguson and why deserves his flowers for his career at the moment. Cormier also talks about why Ferguson is making his welterweight debut against an already established name in Li Jingliang who’s a very tough opponent, considering Ferguson is on a 4-fight skid already.
“The reason he is fighting Li is that Tony commands big dollars,” says Cormier “When you make the big dollars, there are no easy fights. There are no fights that are easy, so Tony gets an absolute killer. But, Tony Ferguson would not have it any other way guys. He wants the toughest fight. He wants the best guy because that is what he has shown his entire career…” Cormier continued.
Ferguson is fighting Jingliang this weekend at UFC 279 in T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas. The main event comprises Nate Diaz having his last UFC fight against a potential future title contender in Khamzat Chimaev, Ferguson’s fight lies in the co-main slot and other fights to look out for are Kevin Holland vs Daniel Rodriguez and Johnny Walker vs Ion Cutelaba. What do you make of Cormier’s thoughts on Ferguson? Where do you put Ferguson amongst the most fan favourite fighters of all time? In his prime, Ferguson was on a 12-fight winning streak and beat the likes of Rafael Dos Anjos, Donald Cerrone, Anthony Pettis, Kevin Lee and many more.
