Daniel Cormier reacts to Rose vs Esparza! Rose Namajunas fought Carla Esparza for the women’s Strawweight title. The fight was the co-main event at UFC 274, however; it failed to live up to its standards. The fight is now being regarded as one of the most boring fights in the history of the UFC.
Namajunas and Esparza first fought in the season finale of The Ultimate Fighter. Esparza won the fight, submitting Namajunas to become the first UFC women’s Strawweight champion.
In the second fight at UFC 274, Carla won via Split decision. Two judges had it 47-48 and 46-49 for Carla. But one judge scored it 48-47 in favor of Rose. The fight is now regarded as the worst title fight in the UFC and many claimed they even dozed off during the fight.
Only 6 punches were thrown during the first round and even the commentators pointed out how bad the round was. The second round was the same as the first, and both the commentators and the crowd showed their displeasure. The remaining three rounds were the same and it was very difficult to determine the winner as there was very little to score.
“Those takedowns really froze Rose”- Daniel Cormier talks about Rose Namajunas’ gameplan at UFC 274
Joe Rogan, Daniel Cormier, and Jon Anik were in the commentary booth for UFC 274, and they were really disappointed by these two athletes. They expressed their views with full honesty, and DC touched down on it during the post-fight conference.
He said, “Rose and Carla are going to be pissed off at us because we had to kind of call it like it is. No one is above criticism and that fight was to be criticized. If you’re Rose Namajunas, you go home and you are really disappointed because you kind of played chance with your championship, because in those first three rounds, I don’t know how anybody judged it.”
DC added, “I don’t know how any judge… listen, Jon Anik who is literally one of the smartest people I know goes, ‘The very last scoring criteria is octagon control, which no one ever gets to.’ Tonight, that’s the only way they could have judged those first three rounds and given them to Carla.”
“It’s just a game of chance I didn’t quite understand how either corner could feel confident in their advice to their athletes. It was a rough one to watch. And I think that first fight, those takedowns, really froze Rose, because on so many occasions, she’s given us tremendous performances,” DC concluded.
