Daniel Cormier doesn’t think Israel Adesanya should get an immediate rematch after his latest loss against Sean Strickland. The former UFC champion and UFC commentator recently shared his thoughts regarding the middleweight division’s future following a significant upset in Sydney.
Cormier mentioned that the manner in which the loss occurred and the various potential matchups that could have in the middleweight division, Izzy shouldn’t get a rematch against Sean Strickland.
He said, “The last time Izzy lost, all we could speak about was he should be next again. I don’t think that this time. Don’t think he should fight for a belt next time. I don’t think he should get an automatic rematch. I think the division needs to move on a little bit.” during the post-event wrap-up on ESPN+ PPV.
The last time Izzy lost his title against Alex Pereira, he was doing great up until the last round. However, this time, he got dominated throughout the fight and looked way off from how he usually fights. Like DC, many fans believe that Izzy should not get an immediate rematch.
Dana White talks about Israel Adesanya’s shockingly underwhelming performance at UFC 293
White believes that Israel Adesanya didn’t perform at his usual level during UFC 293, but he’s unsure exactly why that was the case. During the post-fight press conference, White revealed that Izzy looked stiff to him and he wasn’t even trying his best to get a knockout when he needed it the most.
The UFC president said, “He looked bone-dry tonight, standing up really tall. He looked very slow. He looked like he couldn’t get off at all. Even in the fifth round when everybody knew he needed a knockout to win the fight, there was no sense of urgency to try to finish the fight. So I don’t know if he’s hurt or if tonight’s the night.”
After the fight, Adesanya chose not to participate in the typical Q&A session at the post-fight press conference, instead having coach Eugene Bareman represent him. So, any insights will have to wait for another time. Nonetheless, Dana White acknowledges that Strickland deserves significant praise for his performance.
