According to a news release from the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez was formally charged with attempted premeditated murder and several firearms assault offenses in connection with a shooting Monday night in San Jose, California.
Velasquez was following Goularte’s truck in his own vehicle during an “11-mile, high-speed chase” through San Jose, rammed the truck, and then fired a 40-caliber handgun multiple times into the truck, which carried Goularte and two older relatives. Goularte’s 63-year-old stepfather, Paul Bender, was struck once in his arm and torso but is expected to survive, court documents said.
Velasquez was found and arrested afterward during a traffic stop, according to court documents. He is charged with attempted murder; shooting at an occupied motor vehicle or aircraft; three counts of assault with a firearm; three counts of assault with a deadly weapon; willfully discharging a firearm from a vehicle; and carrying a loaded firearm with intent to commit a felony.
Goularte, who was not hurt in the event, is charged with performing sexual or lascivious conduct on a kid under the age of 14 who happens to be the daughter of Cain Velasquez.

Now as he is on this journey and this fight that he’s in, I try to support him as best I can. Every time you see him go to court or something, I will be there because he was always there for me.”
In late 2010, when Velasquez was the UFC heavyweight champion, Cormier had only recently begun his professional mixed martial arts career. Because of their friendship and training together at American Kickboxing Academy, Cormier stepped down to light heavyweight and won the UFC belt.
Cormier later became a champion when he won the UFC heavyweight belt. Velasquez stood at DC’s side through all of the ups and downs. Hence it is no secret why Cormier would support Cain in his battle.
