Themba Gorimbo still chooses to sleep on his gym couch before his UFC bout despite having a house gifted to him by Dwayne Johnson. Earlier this year, one of the UFC’s rising stars, Themba Gorimbo, got the attention of Johnson after the fighter revealed that he had only $7 in his bank account. The fighter mentioned that he had to sell his kit and fight earnings to support the construction of a water well in his hometown in Zimbabwe instead of investing the money in his own career.
The Rock found out about the fighter and ended up surprising him. The engagement between Dwayne and Gorimbo extended further when Johnson observed Gorimbo’s sleeping arrangement: a couch surrounded by his luggage and an inspiring sign meant to keep him motivated, considering he is a 32-year-old veteran. Johnson and Gorimbo then took a drive together, which ultimately led them to a house that the famous WWE superstar had purchased for Gorimbo. This house now serves as Gorimbo’s new residence, enabling him to continue his training in Miami.
However, in a recent interview with TMZ the fighter claimed that he still sleeps with his gym coach during the training camp. He said, “It belongs to me. When the fight camp kicks in, six weeks from the fight, I’ll probably go back to the gym and sleep on that couch. With the blessing that he gave me, you know, giving me a place to stay, and having to do everything that he’s done for me … for me, it’s a blessing from God. It is really, really, really surreal.”
According to the fighter, he appreciated what the ‘Rock’ did for him but he would probably go back to sleeping on his gym coach when he’s training for his next fight. It seems like the fighter doesn’t want to forget his roots and struggles and plans to be prepared for his upcoming opponent in his own way.

Themba Gorimbo escaped working in diamond fields to become a UFC fighter

Themba Gorimbo has one of the best stories on the UFC roster when it comes to rising from nothing. In an interview, Gorimbo expressed feeling fortunate to have survived his experience in the Marange diamond fields in Zimbabwe, emphasizing that illegal miners face pursuit by dogs, horses, police officers, and military personnel within the area.
He remembered witnessing people getting killed when he was very young, and he mentioned that German Shepherds nearly took his life, leaving him with scars all over his body. Additionally, Gorimbo recounted an episode from years ago when he was apprehended by the authorities in the diamond fields. Evidently, he was extremely thin at the time and was bitten and pulled by the dogs while underground. These large and aggressive dogs resulted in significant blood loss for Gorimbo.
He said, “I almost got killed but that day was pivotal for me. After one week some of the wounds were not healed but I thought: ‘I don’t have money, I need to go back to the diamond fields and dig again.’ So I went and found the biggest diamond I’ve ever got. It was 12 carats and that’s why I call myself the Cinderella Man. Give me a second chance and I will run away with it.”
After all the struggles and hard work, the fighter is currently fighting for the best MMA promotion in the world. With all the hardships from his past, Gorimbo is currently determined to make his name in the UFC and it will be interesting to see how he performs in his upcoming fights.
