“He elevates everybody,” Despite bitter rivalry, Daniel Cormier admits Jon Jones having the same effect as Conor McGregor

UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier credited Jon Jones for propelling him to his current levels of superstar status. The former two-division champion thinks “Bones” affected his career in a similar way to how Conor McGregor affected Nate Diaz’s. Ben Askren recently mentioned in an interview with DC how Nate Diaz’s career was launched after the Conor McGregor fight, in which Diaz beat the Irishman.

You didn’t miss a McGregor fight,” said Ben Askeren. “McGregor, that one time he fought Diaz… Diaz was not really a big name at [the time]… He beats McGregor, and McGregor actually elevated him… But Jon [Jones] could do the same thing.

Daniel Cormier fully agreed to Askren and even revealed that his rival Jones did the same for him during his prime years in the UFC. He said, “Jon did it for me. My profile was much bigger after his and my interactions. Stipe Miocic was bigger after him and I went through our trilogy. So it really does follow that same formula where once you fight a guy that’s established, your status kind of grows.”

According to DC, after his rivalry with Jones started, it helped him get more attention from fans, which automatically increased his popularity. This carried forward to his trilogy fight with Stipe Miocic.

Conor McGregor hasn’t competed since 2021 due to a succession of defeats at the hands of Dustin Poirier. Fight fans are excited about his rumored comeback this year and it also includes the newest heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, who would love to see the ‘Notorious’ in action. In a recent interview with the OverDog podcast, Jones mentioned that he will always support McGregor for the things he has done in UFC.

He said: “I would love to see McGregor come back. He will always get my pay-per-view buy. I love what he did for the sport, I love the businessman that he is, the mindset, the marketability. I mean, he fast-forwarded this whole game up at least ten years, and he’ll always have my support. He will always get my pay-per-view buy.”
