“Get them out of the Equation”: Dominick Cruz calls for flat purses to avoid risking careers from Judges’ incompetence
Dominick Cruz thinks a flat fee will solve a lot of problems in MMA
Dominick Cruz may be a company man but that doesn’t mean he stays silent on his grievances with the UFC. Formerly the fighter took up arms against Hans Molkenkamp of Monster Energy and the lengths that the fighters had to go in order to please the rep from Monster Energy to gain a favourable sponsorship deal. Now his newest nemesis to fight against? The entire sporting commission
On an interview with Ariel Helwani at the MMA Hour, the former Bantamweight champion expressed his disappointment in the lack of knowledge on the side of the commissions that run the sport and how it adversely affects fighters, especially during the early part of their career. As we know, your pay in MMA is directly dependent on your performance, unlike boxing where an amount is agreed upon prior. The show/win model of payment in MMA is not the only example as even additional bonuses of 50k heavily depend on an athlete’s performance

Dominick Cruz feels Flat-fees is the need of the hour in MMA
Dominick Cruz feels that a commissioner and the people he appoints to oversee the events in terms of judging, lack the knowledge to accurately score MMA and the damage or lack thereof caused by the various elements involved in the sport. “What does he know about the damage caused by a calf kick or 5 takedowns from Khabib Nurmagomedov and but he’s not done much damage, do they understand how exhausted the other guy is on the seventh? “ said Cruz expanding on his comments
“When you really get down to it what are we complaining about? We’re complaining about the pay that the athlete loses according to bad judging” said Cruz describing how people appointed by commissions lack insight into the many facets of MMA being trickled down from boxing. Talking about a possible solution to get that out of the equation in a way that doesn’t hinder an athlete’s career he said, “You can start advocating for flat fees instead of win/show bonuses” alluding to the most recent example of Holly Holm losing half her fees after what many considered to be a bad call from the judges.
Cruz also mentioned how some of these bad decisions from the judges have led to Dana White Sox personally handing the win/show money to a fighter who ended up on the wrong side of a decision asking it to be made the norm. “Pay us a flat fee and if the commission messes up we just book a rematch, nobody loses” said Dominick Cruz a point Helwani concurred with.
