Donald Cerrone is OUT of UFC 274 main card opening bout against Joe Lauzon
Donald Cerrone apparently suffered from food poisoning in the early hours of Saturday
In what seemed to be his last dance, Donald Cerrone has been forced to pull out of his scheduled Pay-Per-View opener against fellow veteran Joe Lauzon. It was announced by the broadcast team during the early prelims, where Jon Anik clarified, “It is a non-covid related illness.”
According to Joe Rogan, Cowboy Cerrone suffered from food poisoning the night before causing him to throw up. Rogan said, “They think what might have happened is Donald ate something bad, because he was throwing up, he couldn’t keep his food down, he would feel terrible and they tried to give him time to recover” mentioning his conversation with Dr. David who confirmed the bout was a no-go
Cowboy, 39, was on a bad losing streak, with the last 5 of his 6 fights ending in a loss for Cerrone, where 3 were first-round finishes. It was believed that the bout against Lauzon would have been Cerrone’s last, as Joe Rogan described it, “loser leaves town“. Donald Cerrone’s team is reportedly looking to reschedule the fight against Joe Lauzon
It was believed that the bout against Lauzon, a fellow veteran with 43 fights to his name would have been much more favorable to Cerrone compared to his previous opponents who have all been either rising prospects or established contenders. According to Ariel Helwani, Cerrone’s team has been trying to reschedule the bout but there have been no updates yet.
Lauzon and Cerrone had been initially scheduled to fight at Fight Night: Font vs VEra however the bout was rescheduled to be the PPV opener for UFC 274. Lauzon had his last fight in 2019 when he returned after a year and a half-long lay-off. He’s been inactive since his first-round TKO victory against Jonathan Pearce
In light of the canceled bout, the prelim-main event between Randy Brown and Khaos Williams has been oved up to the main card. The Welterweight bout will now serve as the opener for UFC 274
