UFC 293 turned out to be a shocker for Dricus Du Plessis. He remained hopeful of fighting Israel Adesanya for the title. Du Plessis had the opportunity to fight Adesanya on the UFC 293 card. However, he pulled out due to an injury. This led to the #5 ranked contender Sean Strickland replacing Du Plessis. Further down the line, Strickland won the middleweight title by defeating Adesanya. Recently, in an interview, Du Plessis spoke about UFC 293 and his fight with Adesanya.
Du Plessis addressed his issues with UFC CEO Dana White in that interview. Du Plessis said,” I have been ready to adjust towards every situation of what might happen this weekend. If I look at my track record, I can definitely say that I’m not somebody that turns down fights.” Du Plessis expressed disappointment in the attitude of Dana White about his withdrawal. Du Plessis had an injury and could not compete but White remained critical of the South African fighter.
The dynamics of the middleweight division have changed after Strickland’s victory at UFC 293. The UFC will update on the next person for a title shot who’ll fight against Strickland. Du Plessis could be the person to step up for the challenge. However, Dana White might give the opportunity to someone else.
The middleweight division is going through a new movement as the division remains stacked with elite-level fighters. Du Plessis may look forward to fighting against Strickland for the world title. His victory against Robert Whittaker puts him in contention for the title. Du Plessis deserves to fight for the title, but he could get bypassed by either Khamzat Chimaev or Paulo Costa.
Dricus Du Plessis calls Israel Adesanya amateur after UFC 293
The #2 ranked middleweight contender Dricus Du Plessis was not impressed by his arch-rival Israel Adesanya. UFC 293 became a bad day for Israel Adesanya as he lost his championship belt to Sean Strickland. Du Plessis, who stood next in line for the title shot, expressed his concerns over Adesanya’s performance, calling it “amateur.”
Recently, in an interview, Dricus said that Strickland and he had the most shocking upsets in 2023. In his bout against Robert Whittaker, no one expected Du Plessis to beat his opponent. But the South African national defied all odds to beat Whittaker. Du Plessis plans to fight Strickland in the future.
Later, he wanted to settle his rivalry with Israel Adesanya. However, the UFC will decide on the next probable opponent for Sean Strickland. Du Plessis could definitely be a strong contender for this position.
