With only a few days remaining, UFC 291 will take place in Salt Lake City, Utah. The bout will be headlined by a rematch between two former interim lightweight champions. Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje will be fighting for the BMF title, which was once held by Jorge Masvidal. With Masvidal being from the same gym as Poirier, ‘The Diamond’ will make sure the belt comes back home.

The BMF belt was first introduced by the UFC for the baddest fighters in the organization. Naturally, the bout was between UFC star Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal, who had just set the record for the fastest knockout in the UFC. Masvidal won the bout via TKO and became the first BMF title holder. However, Gamebred retired earlier this year after his loss against Gilbert Burns. He relinquished the title and started his journey, running his own promotions.

With the BMF title vacant, the UFC fixed a fight between yet another worthy contender. Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje have made a reputation for themselves through their violent and entertaining fights. Given their reputation inside the octagon, it was only fair that the UFC make the decision. Poirier trains in the same gym as Jorge Masvidal used to. Therefore, he feels that it is his responsibility to bring the belt back home.

“Of course it’s significant to keep the belt at the American Top Team. I know Dan Lambert has his trophy cases up front and he’d be proud to put another one in,” said Dustin. Regardless of the outcome, fans are anticipated to witness the electric performances by both fighters and hopefully enjoy their five-round war.

Former lightweight interim champions Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje will go head-to-head against each other inside the octagon. Both fighters have previously fought each other at UFC Fight Night Arizona, where Poirier won via TKO. Despite leaving the octagon bruised and bloody, both fighters have immense respect for each other.

Dustin Poirier willingly shared his spotlight on the UFC crowd cam with Justin Gaethje. Both fighters were in attendance at UFC 276. The card was headlined by Israel Adesanya vs Jared Cannonier and featured the third fight between Max Holloway and Alexander Volkanovski. An event too exciting to miss, which is why it was attended by many big names. Poirier was seated just ahead of Gaethje and almost missed the crowd cam as he was distracted.

Justin Gaethje lightly nudged ‘The Diamond’ and let him know about the crowd cam. After that, Poirier, without any hesitance, pulled Gaethje alongside him, sharing the spotlight as fans cheered for both. No doubt both fighters heavily respect each other, and this weekend they will fight each other for the BMF title as they headline UFC 291.
