Initially, it was Poirier who announced on Twitter saying “Fight news coming soon! ” with fans getting all excited. Many had already assumed it was Chandler ever since the two got into a brawl during international fight week, the footage we received, courtesy of Gilbert Burns.

For Dustin however, this can be seen as a tune-up fight since his last loss to Oliveira as he challenged for the undisputed belt. Ever since he has been on the sidelines while not many, except Nate Diaz have called him out for a fight. In fact, the diamond goes as far as to accuse Chandler of “ducking” him.

Both Chandler and Poirier were finished by Oliveira in their attempt at undisputed gold.

According to Ariel Helwani, the fight is being booked for the UFC 281 card in November. This means it could be the second appearance for Chandler at the iconic Madison Square Garden under the UFC banner. Last time he was in the arena, along with Justin Gaethje he delivered one of the most memorable main card openers at UFC 268.

After that Chandler went on to secure what was perhaps the biggest win of his professional career apart from his championship fights, a flush KO of Tony Ferguson. While Ferguson was on a 3 fight losing streak, the first round was scored for Ferguson by all three judges. Having found his spark, El Cucuy got more relaxed in the second but was caught by Chandler’s perfectly placed front kick.

Poirier on the other hand has not managed to secure a fight since UFC 269. Having failed at his second attempt to become an undisputed champion, Dustin took time off to consider where he sees his career going from now. However it was short-lived as he was soon being called out by Nate Diaz for a money fight.

While Diaz being in the last fight on his UFC contract hindered things in that direction, Dustin finally seems to have secured a fight. Prior to his loss against Oliveira, Poirier was riding high on his win streak of 3 fights against Dan Hooker and 2x Conor McGregor.
