“I had something to say”- Dustin Poirier reveals the reason behind his altercation with Michael Chandler at UFC 276
Chandler and Poirier got caught up in a tussle at UFC 276
An unusual spot is in Dustin Poirier. He is among the top lightweights and pound-for-pound competitors in the world. He has, however, failed a few occasions. While he has defeated everyone else in his division, he has lost two straight title fights. He had expressed a desire in competing at 170 after his defeat to Charles Oliveira. Dustin Poirier discussed his ideas for maybe going up to 170-pounds and contending for the title in a conversation with Laura Sanko. He declared,” Of course I would those are some big guys, man. We’ll see, I definitely think I can fight at 170. Honestly, right now at 155, my metabolism has kinda caught up.”
His head coach also stated that he could be a better welterweight than a lightweight considering the amount of weight he cuts to make the Lightweight weight. He stated, “Plenty big, 155 [pounds] is getting real difficult to make. I’m not certain. He could be a better welterweight than a lightweight. Time will tell, but he’s definitely not small for a welterweight.”
Security separates Dustin Poirier and Michael Chandler following an altercation at UFC 276
Dustin Poirier and Chandler, two UFC lightweights, were present at UFC 276 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The two, however, quickly got into a heated argument, which sparked a verbal exchange that required security to separate the two.Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier questioned Poirier about what precipitated the argument between the two in a recent episode on ESPN MMA. Dustin described the altercation in his own words.
In which he stated, “Nothing negative towards nobody in interviews online. If I have something to say, I’m going to say it when the person’s present and that’s what you saw right there. I had something to say to him and I got it off my chest, told him what I felt about him and that’s it. If he ain’t here to defend himself or for me to speak in front of him, we don’t need to talk about it.”
Since losing the lightweight title fight to Charles Oliveira at UFC 269, Poirier hasn’t competed this year. While still relatively new to the UFC, Michael Chandler is already building a name for himself.
