“162 or 165lbs” Dustin Poirier suggests additional weight classes to fight in the UFC

“162 or 165lbs” Dustin Poirier suggests additional weight classes to fight in the UFC

Dustin Poirier

UFC Lightweight and potential welterweight Dustin Poirier is one huge man for 155 lbs, but perhaps he is not enough for 170 lbs either, for the man needs to compete somewhere in between, at least as per him it seems. Poirier, who last fought and lost his second title fight against reigning defending UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira at UFC 269, has not got any fight since and is desperately weighting from the UFC’s side to give him an opponent worth the name to fight.

Poirier has occasionally gone back and forth with UFC megastar Nate Diaz throughout the first quarter of 2022, but the UFC is reluctant to make that fight happen due to reasons unknown. Now, Diaz is most likely to be made by UFC to fight fellow megastar Conor McGregor, who is expected to return from a grave injury by early fall if McGregor’s business with the UFC runs smoothly. Poirier meanwhile, is also expected to fight at welterweight sooner or later due to struggles with weight cutting.

On Twitter, Poirier recently pulled off a suggestion for the promotion he fights for, the UFC saying “We need 162lbs or a 165lbs division” This is obvious to come from Poirier because of his stories that express extreme hardship in cutting weight. Poirier started off his UFC career as a featherweight, which was an extreme weight cutting time to think of. His move to lightweight was then considered the best decision taken by him as an athlete.

Only time will tell who should be the next to face Poirier, but what if he doesn’t get Nate Diaz? The fourth fight with Conor McGregor would make sense only if McGregor wants revenge for his losses against Poirier. Since Poirier wants to fight at 170 lbs, #4 ranked welterweight Gilbert Burns, who’s just coming off a spectacular fight against #3 ranked Khamzat Chimaev in a fight to be remembered for age at UFC 273, has expressed interest in welcoming Poirier at 170lbs.

What do you make of Dustin Poirier’s suggestion though? Do you think UFC should inculcate more weight classes in its roster? Do you agree with Poirier suggesting a weight class between lightweight and welterweight, or do you have any other number in mind? Indeed UFC should think about what other promotions like Eagle FC are doing- introducing a weight class at every 10 lbs no matter what, starting from 125 and going up to 205 after which, the heavyweight division begins.
