“Thug Nasty” Bryce Mitchell has yet to fight in 2023. Previously, he was booked to compete at UFC 289. However, he pulled out due to an injury. Mitchell faced Dan Ige at UFC Apex in his comeback from injuries. Mitchell needed a win to remain as a contender in the featherweight division. Bryce Mitchell won the bout via decision.
Mitchell lost to Ilia Topuria at UFC 282. His wrestling offense did not work against Topuria, as he got outstruck on the feet. Topuria is an excellent grappler himself and soundly defeated Mitchell. On the other hand, Dan Ige has fought twice in 2023. He defeated Damon Jackson via KO and won a decision against Nate Landwehr. Ige could fight top-ranked opponents if he defeated Mitchell.
As soon as the fight started, Mitchell used his wrestling to pressure Ige. Mitchell took the striking pressure of Ige away with his wrestling. Ige could not find his offense. However, he defended 10 of the 15 takedown attempts from Mitchell. During the post-fight interview, Mitchell brought a Bible into the ring and preached that everyone must fight against Satan as he was taking over the world. Thug Nasty cited the conspiracy theories surrounding wildfires in Maui as a reference to Satan taking over.
Mitchell is a threat in the featherweight division to those who cannot wrestle. Only Topuria has managed to stop Mitchell so far. Mitchell could face a higher-ranked opponent in his next fight. If he can continue his winning ways, he could face Topuria down the line.
