The lightweight division in the UFC has some of the most dangerous fighters on the roster. Rafael Fiziev and Mateusz Gamrot squared off in the main event of UFC Vegas 79. They are both in the top 10 of the lightweight division, and victory means one step closer to a contender status.

The battle between Fiziev and Gamrot presented a classic striker vs. grappler contest. Fiziev is a dangerous striker with three impressive KOs in the UFC. On the other hand, Mateusz Gamrot is an experienced wrestler with the ability to take anyone down in the lightweight division. Fiziev has yet to fight a wrestler of Gamrot’s caliber. Fans will surely learn about Fiziev’s wrestling defense at UFC Vegas 79.

The fight started as a standup battle between the two competitors. They exchanged kicks and some jabs. The most significant moment of the first round came at the end of the round when Gamrot jumped in for a takedown. However, the time expired. As soon as the second round started, Gamrot felt more comfortable trying to wrestle. Nevertheless, Fiziev got back on his feet but injured his leg in the second round.

He lost the ability to stand and succumbed to a TKO loss. The win could likely put Gamrot in the top 5 of the lightweight division. Gamrot also called out Charles Oliveira to a future fight. Gamrot could challenge for the title one day if he keeps on winning.

The loss is not a setback. The lightweight division is really deep with talents. Defeats are part of the journey, and how you bounce back matters. Fiziev must recover before taking another fight. However, he is only 30 years old and could bounce back significantly once he returns from injury.
