Sergei Pavlovich took on Curtis Blaydes at UFC Fight Night to determine the next challenger for the Heavyweight title. UFC will book a title match featuring Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic later this year. However, there remained no clear-cut contender after the Jones vs Stipe fight. It changed at UFC Fight Night 222 when Pavlovich got the stoppage victory over Blaydes in the first round.
Curtis Blaydes has high-level wrestling and posed a significant challenge to Pavlovich. He is also the only heavyweight fighter to land 60-plus takedowns in UFC history. Pavlovich has never fought a fighter with the wrestling pedigree of Blaydes. Fight fans wondered how Sergei Pavlovich could withstand the wrestling pressure heading into the fight. Once the fight started, Pavlovich pressured Blaydes until getting the stoppage victory.
However, once the fight started, Blaydes did not use his wrestling at all. He stood there and tried to land the shots. He has always shown to have a weak chin by getting knocked out. Francis Ngannou and Derrick Lewis dominantly finished Blaydes. Pavlovich had incredible knockout power, and Blaydes did not use his wrestling.
After three minutes, Pavlovich landed a left hook dropping Blaydes, and pounded on him until the referee stopped the fight. The knockout over Blaydes gives Pavlovich the 15th of his career. Heading into the fight, Pavlovich had five straight first-round knockouts. With the win over Blaydes, he extends that streaks to six consecutive first-round finishes and remain the only active fighter with the streak.
