UFC on ESPN 50 in Nashville, Tennessee, featured contenders Cory Sandhagen and Rob Font. Sandhagen and Font will compete at 140 pounds in a catchweight bout. Sandhagen was supposed to face Umar Nurmagomedov in the main event bout. However, Umar pulled out due to an injury which led Font to take the fight on short notice.

Cory Sandhagen was on a two-fight winning streak with impressive wins over Song Yadong and Marlon Vera. He destroyed Vera over five rounds. He came into the bout against Font with a firm focus on fighting for the title. On the other hand, Font knocked out Adrian Yanez at UFC 287. With a win over Yanez, he returned to a top fighter status. The bout between Font and Sandhagen had major consequences.

Sandhagen started using his wrestling to his advantage as Font did not defend them. Sandhagen has not utilized wrestling much in his career but surprisingly became a Khabib Nurmagomedov-like fighter to control the fight. He dominated Font for all five rounds on his way to winning a clear-cut unanimous decision.
