UFC 288 landed in trouble after Charles Oliveira pulled out due to injury. Dana White and the UFC pulled all the stops to save the card. Resilient welterweight Gilbert Burns stepped up on short notice to fight Belal Muhammad at UFC 288. However, despite his bravery, the fight did not favor him. He appeared to injure his shoulder in the first round and had to fight with one arm throughout the entire fight.
After almost a week removed from UFC 288, more details have emerged about the injury. MMA Orbit Twitter account reports that Gilbert Burns suffered torn left AC joint (second to third grade), torn left deltoid, torn left trapezius muscle, and a sprained neck (C4/C5). Multiple injuries stemming from a single fight are unheard of. However, Burns indeed had one of the worst starts in his fight against Muhammad.
Belal Muhammad and Burns started the bout by sizing up each other and finding the range. However, Burns shot for a takedown in the middle of the first round and landed badly on his left shoulder. He could not use his left hand after the failed takedown attempt. He revealed it all on his youtube channel.
Burns said, “I kind of jumped to get the good timing, but I did it wrong with my legs. He sprawled back a bit and did a down block, and I landed right on my left shoulder. All my weight, all Belal Muhammad’s weight was on my left shoulder. The good news is I don’t need surgery. It’s going to be between two to three months recovery.” However, Burns avoiding surgery is a blessing. Hopefully, he can get back to his healthy version soon.
