Leon Edwards has etched his name in the history books. The British welterweight fighter has dethroned, arguably the greatest welterweight fighter of all time Kamaru Usman at UFC 278 to become the new undisputed welterweight champion in the UFC.
UFC 278 was the perfect event for Kamaru Usman to surpass an all-time great in Anderson Silva on the GOAT chart. The Nigerian Nightmare is one of the greatest fighters we have seen in the UFC octagon and is arguably the greatest welterweight champion of all time. He was faced against a familiar foe in Leon Edwards in the main event of today’s pay-per-view event.
Usman was the favorite to win this fight and was almost believed to add another title defense to his record at the Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah. However, Leon was working on his own script. Leon “Rocky” Edwards brought justice to his nickname with a movie-like end to the main event which made earned him the title of the welterweight champion. It is not often where you get to see underdogs like Leon end the reign of a dominant champion like Usman.
Leon was completely dominated in the fight and was 3-1 on the scorecards heading into the fifth round. The commentary team, the fans, and the entire world watching had given up on Edwards to face a unanimous decision loss but “Rocky” pulled a left high kick out of nowhere and slept the Nigerian Nightmare in the final minute of the championship fight.

You couldn’t write a script like this. Not only did Edwards become the welterweight champion of the world, but he also exacted his defeat to Usman in 2015 in spectacular fashion putting him ahead in the rivalry. POETIC. Fans couldn’t help but go nuts over this amazing fight.
The fight had every element to it. Leon also became the first fighter to take down Kamaru in a fight. The Birmingham boy took the punishment in the second, third, and fourth, only to give it back to the champ in style with a highlight reel knockout. Fans were also not happy with the way Herb Dean officiated the fight and had some insults flying his way too.
