UFC 278 saw some spectacular performances from the fighters. However, for one fighter it was her last fight in the UFC. It is recently announced that Cynthia Calvillo is no longer part of the UFC roster. The fighter has been cut from UFC after her split decision loss to Lupita Godinez at UFC 287. This loss was the last in the line of her five-fight losing streak, leading her to be released from the organization.

Calvillo was considered a great prospect by Dana White upon entering the UFC. She joined the promotion in 2017 and gained popularity after her back-to-back wins against Amanda Cooper and Pearl Gonzalez within a month. With her performance in the Octagon, she started being compared to some of UFC’s greatest like Conor Mcgregor and Ronda Rousey. Dana White in an interview told that he felt the same about Cynthia Calvillo as he felt about Mcgregor and Rousey when he first met them.

“The first time I ever met Conor McGregor, I called Lorenzo (Fertitta) and I said, ‘Man, I don’t even know if this guy can fight, but if he could throw a punch he’s going to be a f*cking rockstar.’ You know?” said Dana White. “Ronda Rousey, I had a 45-minute meeting with her, and I decided to do women’s MMA. I feel pretty strongly about this one too,” added White praising Cynthia Calvillo sitting beside him.

All that hype did not fully materialize as she missed the strawweight limit two out of three times. This led to a move to the flyweight division. However, that didn’t work as well as she went 1-4 in the division. With her final loss at UFC 287, she is 9-6-1 in her MMA career. Calvillo was released from the division after her loss at UFC 287. Fans react to the news of the veteran fighter being released. Such is the risky nature of the sport.

Calvillo entered UFC in 2017 with only three professional fights under her wing. She immediately scored 3 back to back wins with victories over Pearl Gonzalez and Joanne Wood. Her first defeat came from ex-strawweight champion Carla Esparaza at UFC 219. Calvillo was able to bounce back with two wins in a row but was struggling to make weight for the strawweight category missing weight two times. This led to her moving up to Flyweight where she again gained a win over Jessica Eye.

Until this point, her career had hurdles but nothing she could not overcome. After this, however, Calvillo failed to win any fight and had 4 consecutive losses becoming 1-4 in the division. Her recent fight with Lupita Godinez at UFC 287 was a close one. But Calvillo ended up losing via a split decision. With this loss, she was released from the UFC recently. Such is the sport where you can be a major prospect once and then be released at some point.
