The featherweight division has given a lot of great moments for the UFC. History makers like Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor had their era. Currently, the division is ruled by champion Alexander Volkanovski. Max Holloway also reigned as an unstoppable featherweight from 2016-19. Recently, Twitter fans wanted to discover who the world identified as the featherweight GOAT. And in this discussion, McGregor gave his opinion on the debate.

On the Twitter post captioned, “Which one is the featherweight GOAT?” to which McGregor replied, “The obvious one.” The world knew exactly who McGregor was referring to from his tweet. Nevertheless, fans reacted to this comment a little differently. They seemed annoyed by the fact that McGregor claimed himself as the GOAT. A fan commented on his post, “Stop eating and prove it.“

The disagreement among fans regarding McGregor has come due to his inactivity and lack of participation in the featherweight division. Compared to him, fighters like Jose Aldo and Alexander Volkanovski have cemented their name in the division as history-makers. Aldo’s 10-year undefeated streak and Volkanovski’s dominant run make them easy nominations for the featherweight GOAT. For the entirety of his career, even Max Holloway has performed at 145 lbs.

The only achievement in McGregor’s resume that makes him eligible for this debate is his double champ status. McGregor was the only fighter in that division who held two belts at once. He also became the first person in the UFC to have these two golds. Many have tried competing with this status, but some failed in such a situation. Alexander Volkanvski and Max Holloway tried their luck at the lightweight belt but could not take it across the finish line.

McGregor’s run in the featherweight didn’t last long as he did not choose to defend his belt. This led to him being stripped of the featherweight title. However, he did not lose in the division. Further, McGregor proceeded to continue his adventures in the lightweight division. His short title run in the 145-pound roster could be the prime reason for fans’ disagreement over the GOAT debate. The world will have different opinions, but nobody in history has done what McGregor did. His two world titles prove that the Irishman deserved his spot in the GOAT debate.
