Alexander Volkanovski defended his UFC featherweight title with class and has shown yet again why he is the pound-for-pound number one in the world. Going into the fight there was nothing but respect from both fighters towards each other. 

In the first round at UFC 290, both fighters were a little cautious but were consistently trading shots while trying to get a lead. Both fighters were very active with kicks and the ‘Great’ was frequently closing his distance to put pressure on the Mexican. In the third round, Yair Rodriguez suffered an accidental headbutt which halted the fight for a while.

As the fight resumed, Alexander Volkanovski connected and rocked the challenger, forcing him toward the cage. The Aussie then took Rodriguez down efficiently and started loading punches from the top which forced the referee to stop the fight.

Alexander Volkanovski has been amazing for a few years now and has always shown up during tough matches. It was Volkanovski’s fifth title defense and he had claimed that pound-for-pound number one spot also. After this win many fans are claiming that the fighter is now a strong contender for the GOAT debate. Here are some of the most notable tweets.

Volkanovski in the post fight interview mentioned that he’s going to have surgery on his arm and then come back to get the lightweight title. Many fans also believe that a rematch between him and Islam Makhachev would be a nice fight in future. Nevertheless, the fight fans showed tremendous enthusiasm for his faceoff with Illia Topuria as well. The future of the featherweight GOAT is undoubtedly intriguing to behold.
