Paulo Costa is currently hospitalized and requires a third surgery to treat his staph infection. He had to withdraw from his match against Khamzat Chimaev due to the infection. The Brazilian fighter faced much criticism from the MMA community lately, especially after Kamaru Usman replaced him on short notice. Amidst all the criticism and opponent changes, new details regarding the fighter’s condition came to light. His girlfriend, Tamara Alves, went on Twitter to reveal the extent of the injury.
“People think that chronic infection is something simple,” wrote Tamara Alves, taking to X. “They should see how Paulo’s elbow looks now.” Alves, Costa’s partner and manager, shared with MMA Fighting that Costa was still in “limbo” due to the active infection. This news comes after Costa needs a third surgical procedure. “Damn, that’s absolutely horrible,” read a prominent reaction on X.
Alves also revealed that the promotion was aware of and had even paid for the second surgery. Despite his injury and hospitalization, Costa remained determined to compete and posted videos of him training in Abu Dhabi online. He was determined to fight as long as he had medical treatment and had the go-ahead. Since then, he has expressed his disappointment on social media regarding withdrawing from the match card.
Costa had a rough time with injuries throughout his career. He was set to fight former champ Robert Whittaker in February but had contract disputes with the UFC. His July bout with Ikram Aliskerov was scrapped ten days from the event. His last match came against Luke Rockhold at UFC 278. It is safe to say that fight fans would not get to witness him fight till 2024.
Fans react to grisly imagery reveal of infection on Paulo Costa
Tamara Alves revealed recent imagery updates on Paulo Costa’s elbow infection. In what has been a stretched-out prejudice against Costa not being on the UFC 294 card anymore, people have reacted to it wildly. The contentious issue began three weeks ago, with the first details emerging about an elbow surgery. Costa had undergone two more such surgeries since then.
After facing disappointment with his last two bouts falling through, Costa traded insults with Khamzat Chimaev for the build-up to their bout. In lieu of the latest surgery, Costa released an additional video and written statement on Instagram addressing the circumstances around his withdrawal from UFC 294. With Costa’s withdrawal, Chimaev now tackles former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman in a middleweight bout. UFC CEO Dana White had already announced that the winner would score a title shot against current champion Sean Strickland.
