Fighter Alex Pereira knocked out Jiri Prochazka to win the light heavyweight gold at UFC 295. In the post-fight Octagon interview, he called out longtime rival Israel Adesanya. After seemingly stunning his opponent with a powerful right hand that backed him up against the fence, Prochazka aimed at ending the show in the second round.

Pereira responded in kind with an uppercut and a flurry of elbows, leading to a stoppage after Jiri staggered back. Immediately after, “Poatan”, the former middleweight titleholder, made the callout. Recently, Adesanya took to X, to post a comment on the callout. He labeled it with the phrase “like a son uttering his first words.”

This notion did not sit well with many fans of the MMA community. Most fans believe that the champion was being respectful in his callout, and deserved as such. A prime reaction read:

Pereira has long been gunning for a rematch with Adesanya. Both fighters have faced each other before. The Nigerian phenom handed Pereira his skid at UFC 287, with a fateful knockout in the second round. Now, Pereira wants a conclusive end with a trilogy bout.

Many fans have commended that the newly minted champion is dedicated and aspires to overcome Adesanya. Some fans have even mentioned that Pereira’s early formative moments in UFC were solely based on this rivalry.

The Brazilian joins Randy Couture, B.J. Penn, Conor McGregor, Daniel Cormier, Georges St-Pierre, Amanda Nunes, and Henry Cejudo as the eighth fighter to win championships in two weight classes. He only needed seven fights (eleven total in MMA) to reach the goal though. However, Pereira aims to focus on the future rather than dwell on his win.

Fans react to Israel Adesanya labelling callout from ‘son’ Alex Pereira

Former UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya is coming off a very recent upset to Sean Strickland at UFC 293, in Australia. Following the skid, he has said to New Zealand’s “The Rock” radio show that he does not plan on returning for a long time.

In a recent message, Pereira made a callout to the ‘The Last Stylebender’. Pereira acknowledged the skills of the Nigerian, who handed him a loss the last time they met in-ring. He also said that Adesanya is a very talented fighter.

He believes that his skills are wasted on a sabbatical. Conversely, Adesanya has not been so respectful about the matter. The fans have, accordingly, reacted to it as such.

Adesanya, the two-time former champ, has fought four title fights in the last 14 months alone. He has stated that he plans to return in 2027. This move, while critically taken in by fans and peers, has been also praised by some. This includes the likes of Jon Jones, who himself is currently reeling from an injury.
