“I want to throw up” – Fans upset over ‘grappling tutorial’ between Derrick Lewis and Jailton Almeida for five rounds at UFC Sao Paulo

The UFC Sao Paulo main event defied expectations as Derrick Lewis and Jailton Almeida went the distance without a finish. Almeida called out Ciryl Gane for a future showdown.

The main event of UFC Sao Paulo disappointed the fans. With two elite finishers facing off, fans expected a quick finish. Nobody expected the fight to go to a 5-round decision, and that was what happened. Derrick Lewis was a big underdog but was a favorite to earn a KO/TKO finish. Jailton Almeida was a favorite to earn a submission finish.

Neither a finish for Lewis nor a submission for Almedia happened. However, both tried their best to finish the fight with their respective skill sets. Even though Almeida had more than 21 minutes of control time, he could not sink in a choke on Lewis. Moreover, Almeida was hesitant to throw ground and pound on Lewis as it provided an escape path for Lewis to explode and stand up. On the other hand, Lewis proved to be too inefficient in landing the uppercut on Almeida’s entry. He was trying to land the uppercut that put Curtis Blaydes out cold in their bout.

Interestingly, Blaydes was the original opponent for Almeida. Lewis filled in on two weeks’ notice after Blaydes withdrew due to injury. Interestingly, the win over Lewis was Almeida’s first win by decision. He had a hundred percent finish rate before the bout. In the post-fight speech, Almeida called out former interim champion and number-one ranked heavyweight contender Ciryl Gane.

With Sergei Pavlovich and Tom Aspinall fighting next week at UFC 295 for the interim heavyweight championship, Almeida and Gane, if they fight, will have to wait longer to get a title shot. This is because the UFC had already assured the undisputed champion, Jon Jones, a fight with Stipe Miocic on his return from injury. However, if the winner of Jones vs. Miocic retires, it could provide an easy pathway for both Gane and Almeida.

Fans were not excited to see how the main event of UFC Sao Paulo panned out. Whilst everyone expected a finish. The fight ended in a decision win for Almeida, with almost 90 percent of the fight being on the ground. Almeida had full mount and back control for 22 minutes but could not submit “The Black Beast.” Nevertheless, Almeida remained unbeaten in the UFC and now has a former title challenger’s name on his resume.

Unfortunately, that did not stop the fans from booing during the fight and expressing their discontent on social media. See the reaction on social media to the fight below.

The victory over Lewis did not earn any fans for Almeida. Moreover, Sergei Pavlovich, who will fight for the interim title, even trolled Almeida for not finishing Lewis. Pavlovich, in his fight with Lewsi, had quickly finished The Black Beast. Nevertheless, Almedia dominated Lewis throughout five rounds. It is something nobody has been able to do.
