Alexander Volkanovski (R) predicts the results of UFC 279

Alexander Volkanovski has had the ideal year a fighter can dream to have. From defeating his closest rival a third time to reigning atop the pound-for-pound rankings, the Australian is at the peak of his powers.

Many fight fans attributed Max Holloway’s unparalleled durability and pace his path to a victory against the current Featherweight champion. Instead, Alexander Volkanovski just came forward and debilitated Max’s striking and defence alike, with insane speed and level of skill. On the 3rd of July, Alexander Volkanovski looked a cut above No.1 contender Max Holloway.

That is not to mention him completely dismantling The Korean Zombie’s gameplan and masterfully finishing the veteran fighter in the 4th round when he had to intervene and stop the bout. Looking back, that fight made Max Holloway look pretty good, as just about any 135-pound fighter would be laid out on the canvas by the Australian.

However, it is one skill of Volkanovski that fight fans have recently come to adore – that is his cooking. He regularly uploads the most delicious food he makes himself, on his YouTube channel, and as he himself said, food transcends boundaries.

“Purely because he’s an underdog, I’ll be betting on him” Alexander Volkanovski takes his picks from UFC 279 main card

In a recent video that Volkanovski uploaded to his YouTube, he can be seen predicting the winners of the three most highly anticipated bouts from UFC 279. We usually see ex-fighters, pundits and YouTubers show us their thinking behind predicting the outcome of a certain event. However, when champions like Israel Adesanya and Alexander Volkanovski do the same thing, it adds a way more intricate flavour to the content, as these people are the ones that can analyze the fight game the closest.

Speaking of the match-up between Daniel Rodriguez and Kevin Holland, he said “He (Rodriguez) is tidy. If I had to give Daniel Rodriguez the win, I’d go by decision.” Speaking about the other possible outcome, he said, “I’ll probably go with TKO for Kevin Holland.” This pick by Volkanovski was based off of Holland’s explosiveness and awkwardness in attack, which leaves the opponent guessing.

Given his age and recent horrifying loss to Michael Chandler, Tony Ferguson is the underdog in the fight against Chinese Welterweight Li Jingliang. Talking about the match-up, Volkanovski said, “The Leech (Jingliang) looked great in his last fight…Obviously he got tagged hard, but before that I thought Tony looked great too…Purely because he’s an underdog, I’ll be betting on him (Ferguson).” As per the way of the win, he said, “Let’s go submission!

Lastly, and the bout that most people have been looking forward to (Chimaev vs Diaz), Volkanovski had this to say about it, “I think he (Chimaev) should definitely be the favourite…there’s a wide gap. But, Nate Diaz is very durable…you ain’t knocking out Nate Diaz.” Clearly, Volkanovski is betting on a decision victory for Khamzat Chimaev over Nate Diaz, noting the Stockton native’s immense durability and warrior attitude.
