Michael Chandler fights on the 12th of November, taking on Dustin Poirier at UFC 281. No doubt, he believes that a win over Dustin Poirier could propel him closer to a title fight against Islam Makhachev sometime next year.

However, it was the nature of his comments towards Islam Makhachev that had drawn some attention to himself. In the buildup to the fight, Chandler had repeatedly backed Charles Oliveira to get the jump on the Russian fighter, citing his inexperience as a valid point to remember when making any prediction.

Now that Makhachev has emerged as the champion, Michael Chandler has changed his stance.

He said, “Islam is the real deal. I think when I was asked before about it, my answer, I stand behind it. Islam hadn’t fought anybody in the top five… Islam proved that he was who he said he was. I stand corrected. He’s our champion, and I hope I can go out there on November 12th, win my fight, and get that title shot soon.

Needless to say, the hasty change in opinion got Michael Chandler some not-so-positive reactions on Twitter, with most believing that this is a ploy to get a title shot sooner rather than later.

Whatever be the case, Michael Chandler will have his opportunity to stake a claim for the lightweight belt if he beats perennial lightweight challenger, Dustin Poirier. That, however, is easier said than done – Poirier is no slouch. When the two face-off with each other, expect sparks to fly.
