The 2 biggest names in boxing are Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. Their first fight brought the most amount of money to a fighter ever, and set the record for most PPVs buys. There are talks of fans being presented with Mayweather vs. Pacquiao 2. However, rival promoter Oscar De La Hoya did not share the excitement of seeing this fight.
Oscar De La Hoya has been a champion boxer of his time and now is one of the top promoters of the fight game. The CEO of Golden Boy Promotions’ opinions differed from most fans. Upon hearing the news of a rematch between “Money” and “Pacman” he had the following to say:
More power to them. I guess if they want to step in the ring and make money… great… but thats all it is: a money grab… its more visibility and eyeballs to the sport of boxing thats all it is for me as a promoter but as a fighter I dont agree with it.
Oscar De La Hoya to Boxing Social
De La Hoya isn’t technically wrong. Both the fighters are beyond 40 years of age and pushing 50. They are no longer in their glory days health-wise and career-wise. But on the other hand, they are mega names and people would love to see the greatest do what they used to do in the ring. Neither Floyd Mayweather Jr. nor Manny Pacquiao has reacted to De La Hoya’s opinion.
If the fight ever takes place it will shake the sports universe once again just as it did the first time. But would fans be pleased by the performance of the 2 Hall of Famers? Father Time has taken its toll on the fighters, so expecting a prime fight would be foolish. However, just for entertainment purposes, the fight would be amazing. The boxing world can now only wait and see if this fight comes to fruition.
How much money did the fighters make off of Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao?
It is no secret that Mayweather and Pacquaio made big bucks. Their fight was the boxing match to rack in 4.6 million PPV buys, the most in the entire history of the sport.
The individual fighters made more money than most fighters’ career earnings. It is estimated that Mayweather made a whopping 250 million dollars whereas Pacquiao made about 120 million dollars. Take a moment to let that settle in. Making 9-figure earnings shows the caliber of both fighters.
Although it has been quite some time since the fight, it remains the undisputed richest single-night event in sports history. Now the question arises: will we see a sequel to it or will there be another fight that could shake the sports universe in terms of financial gains, only time can tell.
