“Want to give myself more time”- Francis Ngannou confirms the timeline of his return in 2022
Francis Ngannou
UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou might not return anytime soon to action and fans can wait the entire year for that. Despite his setbacks in the fight business, especially against the UFC, Ngannou cannot be a part of the fight game for medical reasons as well. Back in January 2022, Ngannou fought former teammate in Ciryl Gane in a title unification match at UFC 270 with a torn ACL and MCL in one of his knees. Ngannou since then, went on a critical knee surgery that requires a lot of time to proceed to the recovery stage.
It’s safe to say that Ngannou is at the peak of his career. With him being the heavyweight champion of the world, Ngannou had to defeat the likes of Junior Dos Santos, Alistair Overeem, Jairzinho Rozenstruik, Cain Velasquez, Stipe Miocic, Curtis Blaydes and many more. Ngannou has now been an avid wisher of pursuing a career in boxing, but more in a cross-promotional way, just like UFC megastar Conor McGregor did in order to fight Floyd Mayweather back in 2017.
UFC heavyweight Francis Ngannou sees no reason to risk himself returning before completing the recovery cycle
In an interview with MMA Fighting’s THE MMA HOUR with Ariel Helwani, Ngannou talks about various things including his probability of a fight happening with undefeated British boxer Tyson Fury, his chances of winning the fight, his back and forth with the UFC and much more. Ngannou then also gives us an update on returning time to the competition.
“Potentially in November but more likely in December because in December I will be in the full cup of nine months of recovery, even if my recovery seems to be faster I want to give myself more time to not give any chance to re-injure that same knee,” says Ngannou.
What do you make of Ngannou’s expected time to return to fighting? Do you think Ngannou will renew his contract successfully with the UFC and come back to fight inside the octagon? Or will he move on to become boxing’s next big superstar? Ngannou has become a mega-brand in himself without a doubt, but will he be able to carry his name even in adversities and still be able to call himself the scariest heavyweight on the planet?
