“He’s the best right now”- George’s St-Pierre comments on Kamaru Usman’s claim to the title of welterweight goat

Georges St-Pierre Kamaru Usman

Georges St-Pierre believes that Kamaru Usman can become the welterweight division GOAT with the pace he is going now. As Kamaru Usman continues to destroy everybody in the division and maintain his pound-for-pound crown, the talk about him being the greatest of all time makes even more sense.

Usman is currently undefeated in UFC and has defended his welterweight belt five times against tough opponents. The ‘ Nigerian Nightmare’ is on a roll and has ran through the division twice. The last time someone did something like this, it was no other than St-Pierre.

GSP was a dominant force of nature back then and has defended his title eight times and even had success in capturing the middleweight title. Apart from his record, GSP was loved and respected everywhere. It’s hard for any other fighter to get the same amount of praise like GSP.

St-Pierre recently did an interview with SPORTbible in which he was asked about Usman outranking him in the welterweight GOAT debate. While responding to the question, St-Pierre revealed that it is possible given the amount of resources the current generation have and the evolution of the sport.

He said :

“It’s possible. I mean, he is incredible. He’s the best right now. And sport always evolves. The fighters of today are better than the ones of yesterday, generally speaking. The one in the future will be better than the one of today……They are starting with a head start. They have stuff that we didn’t have back in the day, and the future generation would have tools that we don’t have today.” GSP continued, “So, it’s normal. That’s how it is. It’s not necessarily that the guys get better as the they have access to better knowledge, better technology.”

It’s true that it’s extremely hard to compare fighters from two different eras. Many things have changed when GSP was at the pinnacle of the sport and with passing time, change is inevitable. The skilset, professionalism, and competition are way too different now as it was 10 years ago. However, it terms of records and data Usman is extremely close to GSP and looking at his form he might be able to surpass the Canadian in future.
