Georges St-Pierre is universally recognizable as the face of Canadian MMA. During his reign as UFC Welterweight Champion, his star power helped the promotion sell out arenas in Canadian cities. This included Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. The 26-2 veteran retired on a 13-win streak. St-Pierre’s 9 welterweight title defenses hold much gravitas even now. So much so that current titleholder Leon Edwards aspires to to take the ‘GOAT’ status from him, in a similar fashion.

But this is not why the former two-division champion at UFC (welterweight and middleweight) is in the news lately. Georges St-Pierre recently took to X to post snapshots of his gun-range training. he captioned it:

I trained differently today!

The post has garnered much attention, with many reacting to it. A prime reaction read – “Trudeau isn’t gonna like this.” This was a strong inference to Justin Trudeau, leader of the Liberal Party and the Canadian Prime Minister. Between 2022 and 2023, he had banned new handgun sales. Trudeau’s nationwide freeze was later critiqued as being about politics and not just public safety.

The fan-favored face of Canadian combat sports totting guns would not be good symbolism; hence, the comment. St-Pierre, although just a mere gun enthusiast, was recently in the news for lauding an AK-47 in a friend’s car front seat.

Georges St-Pierre is infamous as probably the best-known MMA personality; even more so than heavyweight ‘G.O.A.T’ Jon Jones or the Irishman Conor McGregor. Retiring in 2013 with an astounding record, the fighter upholds them even today. This includes the most control time in the octagon (2:42:04), the most time in the top position (2:22:05), and the most takedowns (90).

But, the famous St-Pierre is now in the news for his range day pictures. With Justin Trudeau’s bill banning assault weapons in May 2022, the scenario has gotten quite the attention of MMA enthusiasts. Check out a few reactions to the Canadian fighter below.

Seen sporting some sort of a Kalashnikov with a birdcage flash hider, fans have showered much praise. St-Pierre’s trigger discipline and tactical acumen have earned him so much interest that fans are keen on a crossover. With this, the fighter joins the ranks of Valentina Shevchenko and Sean Strickland as martial artists with firearms training.
