Georges St-Pierre reveals the 2 fights UFC FAILED to materialize against him before retirement

Georges St-Pierre at the Hall of Fame ceremony

Georges St-Pierre definitely fought the best of the best in his time of fighting, but he too has left some huge spots in his career that he would’ve occupied had UFC aligned the stars well. St-Pierre is the consensus greatest UFC welterweight of all time and the greatest Canadian MMA fighter of all time. St-Pierre retired in 2020 and was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2019. He has the record for the most title victories in welterweight history and once held the record for the most wins in UFC history as well.

St-Pierre defended his welterweight title a couple of times in the first title run and 9 times in the second title run. His list of wins includes the likes of BJ Penn, Michael Bisping, Jake Shields, Nick Diaz, Matt Hughes, Matt Serra, Johny Hendricks, Josh Koscheck, Jason Miller and many more. St-Pierre was training out of Tristar Gym, under legendary coach Firas Zahabi.

Georges St-Pierre open to a potential grappling match with Khabib Nurmagomedov in future

In an interview with Helen Yee, Georges St-Pierre talks about training with Jake Shields, Jon Jones potentially becoming UFC heavyweight champion, who is the stylistically toughest matchup for him in the current competition in the UFC welterweight division and much more. In the midst of all, St-Pierre was asked about the 2 fights that he wanted during his prime time.

“There are 2 fights that never materialized,” says St-Pierre. “The first one was against Anderson Silva and the other one was against Khabib [Nurmagomedov] but for certain reason it did not happen,” he continued. St-Pierre is, however, open for a grappling match against Khabib sometime in the future only if it’s for a good cause.

Quite fair to say, when both Silva and St-Pierre were champions around the same time, which was a long time, the fight between both could’ve happened and a king of fight cards could’ve formulated around this super fight. But St-Pierre couldn’t have returned to welterweight if he moved up to middleweight for just one fight. Also, St-Pierre’s fight against Khabib was close to being formulated but the former has accused time and again of Dana White in luring him unfairly into signing up for the fight, but there’s no hate for it.

What do you make of St-Pierre’s thoughts on these 2 fights that never came to fruition? Where do you put St-Pierre amongst the greatest mixed-martial artists of all time? St-Pierre is one of the few fighters to have captured belts in 2 weight classes, middleweight being the other one.
