Gilbert Burns on Kamaru Usman vs Khamzat Chimaev
The much-anticipated fight between Khamzat Chimaev and Gilbert Burns just took place inside the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida, United States. The fight gained immense popularity as it featured Chimaev who was experiencing a monumental hype. Coming into the fight, Khamzat was expected to just run through Burns, but things took an interesting turn.
But The Brazilian put on a wonderful performance and gave Khamzat Chimaev his biggest challenge. The fight was brutal and extremely close. Khamzat Chimaev who is known for his dominating wrestling failed to do anything on the ground. It helped Burns to capitalize on striking but it wasn’t enough to win the fight. After three rounds, Chimaev was announced as the winner via unanimous decision.
Many thought Khamzat failed to live up to his hype, but the UFC president, Dana White was very impressed by his performance. He says it’s almost unreal for someone to just have 4 fights in the UFC, and take on a number two ranked opponent. He believes it’s very to break into the top 5 of any division, and Khamzat passed his test with flying colors.
“Kamaru is a level above this guy”- Gilbert Burns isn’t considering Khamzat Chimaev to beat Kamaru Usman anytime soon
Khamzat immediately shifted his focus to the champion, Kamaru Usman, and Burns was asked to break down this fight in an interview with MMA Fighting. He claimed Usman is a champ for a reason, and he doesn’t see Khamzat beating him anytime soon. “Kamaru, I think the IQ makes a lot of difference. I think Kamaru is very smart. He hits hard. Kamaru put me away. Three rounds, (Chimaev) couldn’t put me away. I think Kamaru does hit harder.”
He added, “I think Kamaru, the fight IQ with wrestling and striking is better than this guy. With the timing, the movement, with mixing things up, the feints, the angles, I think Kamaru is a level above this guy still. I think Khamzat will be tough, but it’s nothing Kamaru hasn’t seen. I stuffed one takedown, he took me down one time, but nothing. Kamaru’s IQ is different.”
