Colby Covington lost his third crack at the welterweight title in UFC 296. He went against the defending champion, Leon Edwards, and arguably won only one round. When asked about his lousy performance, Covington stated he injured his foot. Days later, he revealed an X-ray of the injured foot. Now, fellow welterweight contender Gibert Burns questioned the legitimacy of the X-ray and the foot injury.
In his recent appearance on ‘The MMA Hour’ show, Gibert Burns claimed the foot injury of Colby Covington could be a hoax. He believed the X-ray could be a fake one since he didn’t see Covington’s name on it. Further, he mentioned instances of seeing ‘Chaos’ walking comfortably soon after the fight. Here is what he said:
I saw him walking everywhere. The X-ray, I don’t see his name on the X-ray. Then we saw him walk everywhere in Miami, playing poker, going everywhere. I didn’t see no cast, I didn’t see anything. I think Leon just shut him down.Gilbert Burns (via All Star)
Further in the interview, Gilbert Burns credited the champion Leon Edwards and said he completely dominated Colby Covington. However, ‘Chaos’ blamed the leg injury for his performance and discredited ‘Rocky’ on his win. Also, he said he couldn’t execute his game plan or fight his natural style. One thing that stood odd in the fight was Covington looked reserved and didn’t use his usual cardio.
Soon after his loss to Leon Edwards, Colby Covington called out Stephen Thompson, who also fought at UFC 296. Currently, he also welcomed options like Ian Garry and Gilbert Burns if they turn victorious in their upcoming fights.
Gilbert Burns on fighting Colby Covington
After his loss to Leon Edwards, Colby Covington expressed interest in fighting Stephen Thompson. However, in a recent interview with ‘Submission Radio,’ he was open to fighting Ian Garry or Gilbert Burns. As such, he insulted both the fighters in a derogatory manner and called Burns a ‘Fat lesbian.’ Now, ‘Durinho’ addressed the callout and looked at the possibility of fighting Covington.
Gilbert Burns, on the All Star show, declined to fight Colby Covington. As such, he slammed ‘Chaos’ for his title fight after a two-year layoff. Also, he mentioned past instances of calling Covington out and said he had no interest in fighting him now. Further, he stated he was focused on his upcoming fight with Jack Della Maddalena and didn’t look past him. Here is what he said:
The way that guy showed up, two years without fighting. I don’t know. I’m not even thinking of this guy. I called this guy out so many times. He had so many opportunities to fight me. Now my focus is on Jack. After Jack, we’ll see.
Gilbert Burns previously fought Belal Muhammad in UFC 288. Unfortunately, ‘Durinho’ injured his shoulder in the fight and subsequently lost the decision to Muhammad. Now, he returns against a hot UFC prospect in Jack Della Maddalena. This fight goes down in UFC 299 next month.
