“Backed out 3 weeks later,” Gilbert Burns fires back at Jorge Masvidal for lying about turning down their fight

“Backed out 3 weeks later,” Gilbert Burns fires back at Jorge Masvidal for lying about turning down their fight

Jorge Masvidal Gilbert

Gilbert Burns will face Neil Magny at UFC 283 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. While this is an exciting welterweight matchup, Magny isn’t the opponent Burns was rallying for.

After his legendary three-rounded war against Khamzat Chimaev, Burns wanted to face the ‘BMF’ Jorge Masvidal. Burns has been calling him out for a year and accused him of turning a fight against him thrice in a row. Masvidal took notice of this comment and stated that he never agreed to anything because of his court cases. He offered to ‘gladly beat the sh*t out of Burns’ in UFC London.

Burns recently appeared on MMA Fighting’s Trocação Franca podcast, and he shared the entire story, he said, “I have no reason to lie. The fight was offered to Nov. 12, and he asked for more time. They offered for Dec. 10 and he said ‘yes’ at first, but then told Sean Shelby he would fight me in Rio.” (H/T MMA Fighting)

Burns added, “When Sean Shelby told me that, I was like, ‘bullsh*t’. I started planning my whole camp to fight this guy in Rio, and he backed out 3 weeks later.” Regardless of this banter with Masvidal, Burns acknowledged Magny as a legit threat, and he’s working really hard to prepare for him.

Magny just passed Georges St-Pierre for the most wins in the welterweight division (20) Magny is a true veteran, and even though he is not currently in title contention, he possesses the skills to end the night of his opponent in a jiffy.

Burns is well aware of these threats, and he is not taking Magny for granted. Burns stated, “If I put pressure on Masvidal, he’s tired by the second round. Neil Magny doesn’t get tired. Everybody that underestimates [Magny] loses to him. He has 20 wins in the division, he just broke the record. Even though he’s not a top-5 guy, he’s a veteran. I kind of have the pressure over me. I have to end this fight and that’s what I’m training for.” (H/T MMA Fighting)

“He called me out to fight in Brazil so he’s asking for it, right? I’ll give him something. It won’t go unanswered. You wish has been granted, so brace yourself because I’m coming to beat you up,” Burns concluded.

Burns is still chasing the title, and with a new champion in the division, he is very motivated to climb back to the top and fulfill his dream of wrapping the undisputed belt around his waist.
