Gilbert Burns is more than happy to be a former lightweight and witness the iconic matchup between Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev come alive. Burns, who is a friend of Oliveira is all in for this matchup of the two 155-pounders on an extraordinary winning streak. Burns reveals if he was the matchmaker for that division, Oliveira vs Makhachev would be the fight to make.
Burns was watching the EAGLE FC 47 event in Miami when he stopped by for an interview with MMA reporter, Helen Yee. In the interview, Burns talks about his future and also the future of the lightweight division. Gilbert, who was up close to watch Oliveira submit Justin Gaethje in the first round of the UFC 274 main event, believes there is no stopping “do Bronx”.
“If Burns was the matchmaker, I would make Islam and Oliveira for sure,” said Gilbert talking to Helen Yee. “That’s a fight that is very intriguing. I still believe Oliveira can get a win because of the striking, the pressure that he does…the Jiu-Jitsu.”

“People saying, the sambo? Oliveira is huge for that division,” said Burns in the interview about the stylistic matchup between the two fighters. Oliveira has the most finishes in the lightweight division while Islam has finished 4 opponents in the last 11 months inside the octagon.
Gilbert also reveals how big Oliveira actually gets during his off-season. “I took a picture with him and I was looking at him like, ‘Bro you are big’ and he said, ‘I get up to 190,’ and I was like wow.” Oliveira is 5ft 10 and Islam is of the same height too. Makhachev is usually known to cut a lot of weight to make 155 pounds for his division.
