Gilbert Burns has reignited his desire to fight Dustin Poirier after “Durinho” retweeted a post by the Twitter handle realruebenking. Poirier has shown interest in moving to the welterweight division after his loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC 291.
Gilbert Burns was on a roll after beating Neil Magny and Jorge Masvidal in consecutive fights at the beginning of 2023 but lost the next fight to Belal Muhammed. On the other hand, Dustin Poirier fought for the first time in 2023 on July 29 for the BMF belt. However, he lost the fight via head kick against Justin Gaethje. Before being matched up with Muhammed, Burns had called out Poirier on Twitter, to which “The Diamond” replied, “Money Talks“.
The “Money Talks” tweet was elaborated by Poirier, who was not in fight shape then but was willing to fight Burns if the UFC offered a good amount of money. Poirier walks around 190 pounds but could have made 170 pounds. Burns used to fight at lightweight before switching weight classes. Both fighters are no strangers to wars inside the octagon. Burns’ fight with Chimaev and Poirier’s first fight with Gaethje will undoubtedly be enshrined in the fight wing of the UFC Hall of Fame.
Burns and Poirier are fan-friendly fighters, and a fight between them could not disappoint. With both of them without opponents, there is a good chance of Burns welcoming Poirier to the welterweight division. Burns is a top contender at welterweight, and a victory over him would put Poirier at the top half of the welterweight rankings.
Michael Chandler advises Dustin Poirier against the welterweight move
Michael Chandler filling in for Ryan Clark in the latest episode of DC & RC. When asked about Dustin Poirier moving up in weight, Chandler said, “He’s not a big 155-pounder.” However, Daniel Cormier thought that Poirier should move up in weight as he might not fight for the lightweight title again.
Chandler and Poirier fought each other at UFC 281 in Madison Square Garden, and the fight was a back-and-forth classic. Poirier choked Chandler out in the third round. Both fighters have been at odds with each other ever since Chandler signed with the UFC.
Poirier has beaten Conor McGregor twice, who is presumably Chandler’s next opponent. Since signing with the UFC, Chandler has put on exciting fights and was close to winning the lightweight title against Charles Oliveira. Poirier, on the other hand, after losing to Justin Gaethje, is looking for a suitable dancing partner at welterweight.
