Glover Teixeira at UFC 275
Jiri fought Glover Teixeira at UFC 275 for the light heavyweight title. Glover was the oldest first-time UFC champion, and he entered the octagon to defend his title for the first time after winning the belt against Jan Blachowicz at UFC 267.
Jiri and Glover were engaged in a very exciting fight and it was probably the best light heavyweight title fight in the history of UFC. The fight was very close until the very end and it was hard to predict who could have won. According to the official scorecard, Glover was winning the fight and would have successfully defended his title.
However, Jiri did the unpredictable and choked Glover in the last 30 seconds of the fight to become the new light heavyweight champion. Jiri is 29 years old, and he is the first light heavyweight champion after Jon Jones to win the title before turning 30.
“Anyone can submit anyone”- Glover Teixeira talks about getting choked out by Jiri Prochazka at UFC 275
Everybody was impressed by Glover’s performance, and he promised his fans to come back stronger, and reclaim the LHW throne. Glover recently appeared on MMA Fighting’s Trocação Franca podcast and revealed the biggest mistake he made during the fight. There was a moment in the 5th round when Glover stunned Jiri, and he could’ve finished it on the feet.
Instead, he transitioned to the guillotine and lost control. Talking about this exact moment, he said, “Instinct, right? He put his head down and his neck fell right into my guillotine. I didn’t go for it, he gave it to me. I could have been more patient, of course. I kind of jumped the gun. But the same way he caught me later, we think that when someone is hurt and tired you’ll catch him with a guillotine and he’ll tap quickly, sometimes he goes out quickly too. But the guillotine, man, I feel like crying watching it again. F**k.”
“I’ve always said this, anyone can submit anyone. You can put Roger Gracie in there, who has the best jiu-jitsu in the world. If someone knocks him down and he’s hurt, you can get him with a rear-naked choke. You’ll compete in jiu-jitsu with Rodolfo Vieira and you won’t catch him, I bet that, but it happens in MMA. And it happened with me,” Glover concluded.
