“Stop jeopardizing this”- Head coach admits lashing out at Khamzat Chimaev during his fight against Gilbert Burns at UFC 273
Andreas Michael on Khamzat Chimaev
Khamzat Chimaev fought at UFC 273, where he delivered a fight of the year contender against Gilbert Burns. It proved out to be his toughest test to the date, but he won the fight via unanimous decision. As a by-product of the battle he fought, Chimaev took the most damage in this fight than in his past four fights in the UFC, with a reception of over 100+ significant strikes.
Before that, Chimaev was only hit only twice in a total of all his 4 fights. Other than receiving the unexpected amount of hits, Chimaev also got knocked down once in the second round. Regardless, Chimaev showed that he is not only about the talent, but has also got fighter’s will as well.
As said by his coach Andreas Michael, Chimaev is a warrior who wanted to go to war. Regardless, Chimaev has got the upper hand over the #2 ranked welterweight in the world in just his fifth UFC fight. Khamzat had mixed emotions after the fight, and he felt bad for his coaches. He said he definitely made some mistakes, and now he’s going to work on them to become a better fighter.
“I’m saying is to do more intelligent fights”– Coach wants Khamzat Chimaev to take a more calculated approach to his career
Khamzat’s coach was fired up at the event, and he was yelling at his disciple to follow the game plan. He touched a little more on the subject during his interview with Ariel Helwani from The MMA Hour, he said, “I got very upset and I just told him, ‘Listen. We’ve been working for this for, like, 10 weeks. Stop jeopardizing this because you want to show everyone you’re the man. Understand? You are the man, but keep it simple.”
He then took the example of Jon Jones who is considered one of the greatest fighters of our era. He said, “I don’t remember Jon Jones’ fights in his last part of his career. They haven’t been spectacular, but nobody remembers that. You look at Sherdog and you see win win win win win win-win.”
“At the end of the day, that’s what people remember, sad to say. They love a winner and they forget about a loser. I’m not saying I’m pushing him to do boring fights, what I’m saying is to do more intelligent fights and he has the ability,” Andreas concluded.
