“Only if You had Gold” Henry Cejudo and Petr Yan get in a fierce spat over who would triumph in a fantasy fight

Henry Cejudo and Petr Yan

Petr Yan has previously made it very clear how he feels about Henry Cejudo’s untimely retirement. The Russian has accused the Olympic Gold medalist of ducking him and using retirement as a way to do the same. The two recently got into a Twitter spat that further escalated their hate-filled relationship.

Since Petr Yan lost his title to Aljamain Sterling in 2021, the hopes of him recapturing his undisputed title were high if not unanimous. All of that came to screeching halt when Aljamain Sterling displayed the wonders taking someone’s back in MMA can do. Since losing to Sterling a second time, Yan is stuck in limbo as most top contenders around him have fights booked while he has no clear path to the title. Today Yan called out the ideal opponent since everyone else is already booked.

Henry Cejudo has long teased a return to competition even recently entering the USADA testing pool. While he has shown interest in the prospect of being a 3 weight champion going up against Alexander Volkanovski, Cejudo has stated he wouldn’t be shy of retaking his bantamweight title either. Recently Aljamain Sterling offered Cejudo a golden opportunity to cut in line ahead of TJ Dillashaw and fight for the bantamweight title. While Dana White might have other plans Cejudo found his best route back to a title shot with Petr Yan calling him out.

Yan’s last victory came in an interim title fight against Cory Sandhagen

The Russian took to Twitter and posted a fan-made poster of the two with the caption, “You talked a lot when you were retired. Now it’s time to back it up.” Though Yan gave Cejudo gave props on the day of his retirement he immediately called him out for ducking the Russian the next day.

Cejudo replied to the tweet calling out Yan’s questionable grappling and how he would fare against an Olympian wrestler when he struggled against a collegiate one. He said, “Only if you had the gold I would have loved to have buried. You should go back to Dagestan and learned more wrestling because you got outwrestled by Division III all-American. That wouldn’t be smart of you taking an Olympic champ after that (loss). I’m after Gold hoe”

Yan held back no punches and directly accused Cejudo of retiring right when he was in title contention and coming back the day he lost his chance at regaining the undisputed title. The tweet read, “The truth is you retired the day I became number 1 contender and unretired on the same day I ceased to be the champion. Now you ducking me again only proving those facts”

In his response, Cejudo questioned everything from Yan’s management to why he should be bothering fighting contenders in the first place. He also alleged that anyone who can be dominated by a division 3 wrestler will get obliterated by an Olympic Wrestler who is also a 2 division UFC champion. He said, “And you lost to ALJOLAME twice. Do you think the Olympic champ 2 division UFC is going to play with sorry ass contenders. Your fat ass bold manger is going to get your hurt. I’ll give 20% off if you subscribe to my technique of the week. You know I’m getting the title shoot next”

While the tweets from both sides were probably sent out by their respective management teams, they regardless have a professional and competitive hate towards each other and any future fights will be seen through that context. Who do you think will reign supreme when the King of Cringe and No Mercy Yan collide?
