Henry Cejudo will return to the UFC after three years at the PPV in Newark, New Jersey. He will take on Aljamain Sterling for the bantamweight title at UFC 288. Cejudo went on Fox Sports Australia channel to promote his fight in the lead-up to the bout. Middleweight contender Robert Whittaker interviewed the Olympic gold medal winner. However, during the interview, Cejudo had an exciting offer for Whittaker.
Henry Cejudo said, “Robert, you already know. You’ve seen the fight feedback that I did on you. I think there is a lot that I do believe you can reclaim that 185-pound title. You know what I’m saying, recognizing that distance a little bit more, adjusting your stance on that lead leg. I mean, that could be the biggest difference for Robert Whittaker when he beats Israel Adesanya, and I’ve said it before I’ve never chased anybody, Robert, but there is one guy that I’d really like to teach and really have them dissect beyond the cringe. It’s you, bro.“
Robert Whittaker fought Israel Adesanya twice in 2019 and 2021, losing each time. Adesanya knocked out Whittaker in 2019. In their second fight in 2021, Whittaker managed to go the distance with his rival. However, the judges scored the fight for Adesanya. He will take on Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 290 in a title eliminator bout.
Henry Cejudo remains confident in the ability of Whittaker. He feels that distance management remained why Whittaker could not defeat Adesanya. Adesanya employs many kicks to maintain distance from his opponents. The leg strikes made it difficult for Whittaker to land any significant strikes. However, Henry Cejudo believes he can help Whittaker defeat Adesanya.
Robert Whittaker is open to collaborating with Henry Cejudo
The former bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo offered to train Australian fighter Whittaker in his rematch against Adesanya. Cejudo believes Whittaker can make certain adjustments to ensure victory against his rival. He officially made this offer in an interview on Fox Sports Australia.
Whittaker is open to the offer to train under Cejudo. He said, “It would be a privilege to be able to pick his brain and see what he can give me to make me better. I would be honored to be able to go over there and to work with him, work with that mind.“
Any potential team-up between Whittaker and Cejudo will depend on the Australian’s next fight. He will fight Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 290. Dana White stated that the bout is a title eliminator. If Whittaker can defeat Dricus Du Plessis, he and Cejudo will join forces to dethrone the UFC middleweight champion.
