Though Robert Whittaker can see why Israel Adesanya likes to play it safe since he has recently defended the current champion in an interview, he refrains from being a fan of that style. Though Adesanya has defeated Whittaker twice, the Australian remains to be the closest competitor to the Nigerian-Kiwi mixed-martial artist so far. Adesanya is not only the current UFC middleweight champion but he is also the #2 ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the official rankings.

Adesanya’s list of wins other than Whittaker includes Yoel Romero, Derek Brunson, Paulo Costa, Anderson Silva, Marvin Vettori, Kelvin Gastelum, Jared Cannonier and many more. Whittaker’s resume is no less impressive with his list of wins including the likes of Romero, Brunson, Vettori, Gastelum, Cannonier, Ronaldo Souza, Uriah Hall, Darren Till and many more. Somewhere down the line, Whittaker believes a trilogy between him and Adesanya is inevitable in future.

“Israel’s fighting the exact same way like he’s always fought,” says Whittaker “He’s like a picture-perfect defensive striker that uses his physical attributes perfectly with the way he fights. The only difference now is that he’s fighting much higher quality guys and they’re a bit harder to stop, you know a bit harder to go away, a bit tougher… I don’t like that style because it’s pain in the ass fighting against…”
