Holly Holm aims to retake gold after a victory over Ketlen Viera this weekend
Very few athletes can claim to have achieved the amount of success and the sheer diversity in that success that Holly Holm has. A former boxing world champion, she’s widely recognized as one of the greatest female boxers to ever grace the ring having defended her titles a combined 18 times. Holm also claims the title of possibly the biggest upset in MMA history, when she defeated Ronda Rousey in Melbourne, knocking her out and handing Rousey her first defeat in the sport. This moment also granted her another achievement that she alone holds, having won world titles in both boxing and the UFC.
At 40, when most of her compadres have long hung up their 4-ounce gloves, Holly Holm is determined to make one last run at tasting Gold in her life. This weekend as she main events UFC Vegas 55, going against rising contender Ketlen Vieira that’s exactly what she looks forward to doing. In an interview with TMZ Sports, she described how she views and trains for every fight as if it’s her last and her ambitions of being Champion once again.
Holly Holm returns this weekend after year-long inactivity
Holm who is 2-1 in her last three aims to extend her winning streak to 3 as she takes on Vieira this weekend. Holm was inactive for all of 2021 with her last outing against Irene Aldana coming in October 2020, a bout she won by unanimous decision at Fight Island, Abu Dhabi.
When asked what challenge Vieira will pose for Holm, the former Bantamweight Champion described her opponent to be tough saying, “She throws punches with intent, she wants to make me hurt, she’s strong with her clinch” describing how Vieira’s all-around effectiveness makes her a very difficult fighter for anyone. Holm however believes she can handle all she has to give saying, “I’m just ready for all of it”
Holm was confident in her ability to win this weekend and aims for bigger things post-UFC Vegas 55. When asked if she would land a title shot after a victory this Satiurday, Holm seemed pretty confident with the idea of it. She said, “I definitely think that the very next fight could be for the title and that’s why I need to make the most of this fight” Holm described the importance of each fight at this late stage in her career saying, “Any fight I have I treat as my last fight, could be your last opportunity you never know”
When asked if she ever thinks about walking away from the sport, Holm clarified that her goal was to be a champion saying, “What would my purpose even be right now? My goal is to be a Champion”
